The United Nations Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights, Ms. Alexandra Xanthaki, will be conducting an official visit to the Federated States of Micronesia from June 2nd to 13th, 2025. This visit, at the invitation of the Government, aims to assess both the positive practices and the challenges concerning the promotion and protection of cultural rights within the country.

A key focus will be on ensuring inclusive participation in cultural life, fostering respect for diversity, and identifying obstacles to the full realization of cultural rights for all members of society.

Background
This visit is crucial for organizations dedicated to artistic freedom of expression. The Special Rapporteur will be gathering information from a wide range of stakeholders, including government representatives, international organizations, local authorities, civil society groups, academics, artists, and cultural practitioners, particularly those from marginalized communities.

The Special Rapporteur will present her report, including recommendations for the Government and other stakeholders, to the UN Human Rights Council in March 2026. This report will significantly influence the future direction of cultural rights initiatives within the Federated States of Micronesia.
