In 2013 Mimeta and Prince Claus Fund joined forces in an attempt to develop synergies by publishing a joint geographical call for proposals. The call had a special focus on freedom of speech, censorship, marginalized groups and culture and conflict. 18 projects were selected from the call in total and below you will find the six projects co-funded by Mimeta.

The project consists of organising meetings about literature to connect authors with the public. The invited authors engage in a discussion, concluding with a debate about the content of their literary work. Subsequently, a literary bulletin will be produced, that reflects on the meetings and provides a more extensive analysis of the presented works by eminent critics.

MoLi documents hate crimes and abuse based on sexual orientation, gender expression or identity. MoLi encourages the LGBT community to express itself through art in order to fight against discrimination and promote tolerance, as well as to build confidence. An independent group of volunteers established in 2008 in downtown Cairo. The main objective of the group is to create cultural and artistic mobility within neighborhoods that are deprived from any cultural activities. Media Balady was as established by a group of volunteers from various artistic and cultural backgrounds in 2011. Main objective is to observe, document, publish and conduct media coverage for cultural and artistic events that do not abide by the market´s commercial criteria, and that do not attract the media, i.e. independent art and culture. After the Egyptian revolution the role of Media Balady became much more important by giving chance to the different talents to express themselves freely, as opposed to the mainstream media channels.

Aims at redefining the persisting identity of the people of Port Said and other cities around the Suez Canal. This is achieved by adopting young artist´s initiatives addressing and interacting with socio-political issues, accommodating and presenting various performances; providing training services to young artists, exposing and linking them with older artists to improve their skills; and by creating a media network that support cultural and artistic initiatives as well as contributing in building the capacity of people working in the media sector.

The Ard El Lewa neighbourhood “is a section of that mushrooming belt of slums surrounding Greater Cairo” according to Artellewa Director, Hamdy Reda. And this is what gave rise to the creation of Artellewa as a space for art that directly serves the people of the neighbourhood, so as to link them with the broader cultural scene in Cairo and the world at large. In addition to hosting art exhibits and installations for artists, Artellewa offer painting workshops for children, mime workshops and creative writing workshops for imaginative youth aged 15 to 25.

Al-Resala Centre offers programs such as the Dissemination of Culture for School Children, The Role of School Journalism in Supporting Democracy, Youth and Camera, and the Vanguard of the Future Choir project. Al-Resala is developing journalism in the provinces and small local communities in order to generate greater transparency, empowerment and efficacy in remedying the problems particular to each small town. The workshops are the first step towards building a strong and influential local press capable of bringing facts to the light.
