Africulturban is a cultural association that works for the promotion and development of Hip Hop and urban culture (Dj Rap Graffiti Breakdance Slam etc.) in Senegal and in Africa through frameworks of artistic expression (festival concert exhibition conference workshops projection forum debate training).
In Senegal and in urban areas more generally, urban culture generates diverse and dynamic forms of expression without, however, the appropriate frameworks to best promote and contribute to the successful structuring of a sector that can generate substantial income and professionalize the chain of creation, production, distribution and export, but also to optimize the networking and partnerships for urban culture to be truly taken into account by national and regional sectoral policies.
The Hiphop Akademy was be the first training and documentation centre in Africa and enabled this part of the Senegalese youth to improve their skills and access information. To contribute to strengthening social cohesion and economic growth for some, especially in Senegal and in large urban areas, the Hip Hop Akademy created appropriate training frameworks in the different areas (graphics, video, design and development of marketing projects, communication and management in urban cultural sectors, etc).
It started in 2006, with Africulturban developing the biggest Hip Hop festival in Senegal .2006-2007-2008-2009-2010-2011. The sixth edition of Festa2H (international festival of Hip-Hop and urban cultures) took place from June 17th to June 25th 2011 in Dakar and more particularly in the suburbs, Pikine, Rufisque, and Ouakam. The Festival showcased talents from lots of countries: France, Belgium, Canada, Senegal, Mauritania, Brazil, Morocco, Gambia and Switzerland Spain and Denmark.
The festival has mobilized more than 20.000 spectators and had made it possible for more than 150 groups to be familiarized with the Senegalese audience. The event mobilized many youth and surprised again by its originality, its coherence and a very strong adequacy with the request of the Senegalese public regarding Hip-Hop events. The leaders and influential members of the Hip-Hop movement underlined the importance of this demonstration to rejuvenate and partner with other actors in order to produce significant actions.
